Most businesses take cards, but it is always a good idea to carry cash with you, especially if you're going to the farmers market or the beach. There are only two ATMs in Puerto Viejo and they sometimes run out of money, so make sure you're not out of cash if that happens.

Getting to and from the airport Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) is the main international airport if you want to reach Puerto Viejo. There's also a very small airport Limon Airport with connecting flights to San Juan.
By bus ($10-$11 | 4-5 hours to the city) Buses go regularly between Puerto Viejo and San José. The bus from Limon to PV is about 1.5 hours and costs around $2.75.

There is no app for public transportation but since Puerto Viejo is fairly small you can easily move around by taxi, bus or even a Tuktuk.
The best and most popular way to move around Puerto Viejo is by bike. You can find bike rentals for around $3 to $15 USD a day. You can also rent a scooter for $35-40 USD a day.
There are no gas stations in Puerto Viejo but the closest one is only 10 min drive outside of the city.
